๐Ÿ”  Lesson: Type Capital UI (Uppercase)

Practise capital UI with the Shift key. Hold the Shift on the opposite hand of each letter and press the letter with its normal finger. These 4 exercises take you from short capital drills to longer mixed runs, with a live keyboard showing the exact fingers.

How to Type Capital UI Correctly

Capital letters are typed by holding Shift and pressing the letter. For these letters the standard touch-typing rule is simple: press Shift with the pinky of the hand that is not typing the letter. That keeps both hands balanced and avoids awkward stretching.

On a standard keyboard, U (right index finger) and I (right middle finger) do the typing. All of these keys are on your right hand, so hold the left Shift with your left pinky for every capital. Release Shift between letters when the next one is lowercase.

Use Shift for capitals at the start of names and sentences. Caps Lock is only worth it for several capitals in a row, and forgetting to switch it off is a classic beginner mistake. Not comfortable with the lowercase version yet? Warm up with the lowercase UI lesson first.

How do you type capital UI on a keyboard?

Hold the Shift key on the opposite side of each letter and press the letter with its normal finger. All of these keys are on your right hand, so hold the left Shift with your left pinky for every capital.

Should I use Shift or Caps Lock for capital UI?

Use Shift for single capitals such as the first letter of a name or sentence. Use Caps Lock only when typing several capital letters in a row, and switch it off afterwards.

How can I get faster at typing capital UI?

Practise slowly with the correct Shift pinky first, keep your eyes on the text, and speed up only when you stay accurate. The exercises here build from short drills to longer runs.

Keep Practising
