🖐️ Lesson 3: Type the Letter D
D is typed with your left index finger and lives right under it on the home row, next to S. These 4 exercises build that muscle memory from a single tap all the way up to a five-letter run. Keep your eyes on the text above, not on your hands.
How to Type the Letter D Correctly
The letter D is one of the four home row anchor keys (A S D F) that touch typists rest their left hand on between every keystroke. It's pressed with your left index finger, without moving your other fingers off A, S, and F. Now that you've practiced A with your pinky and S with your ring finger, D brings your index finger into the same steady home row position.
This lesson uses four short drills — a single tap, a double tap, a triple tap, and a building rhythm from one to five letters — so your index finger learns the exact distance and pressure needed to hit D cleanly, every time, without looking down at the keyboard.
Your left index finger. It should already be resting on D when your hand is in home row position, so pressing it is a small downward tap, not a reach.
D sits right next to S on the home row. Practicing A, S, and D in order builds up your left hand's home row muscle memory one finger at a time.
