🖐️ Lesson 4: Type the Letter F

F is typed with your left index finger and is one of the four main home-row anchor keys. It sits directly under your left index finger, next to D. These 4 exercises build your muscle memory from a single tap all the way up to a five-letter run. Keep your eyes on the text above, not on your hands.

How to Type the Letter F Correctly

The letter F is one of the four main home row anchor keys (A S D F) used by touch typists. It is pressed with your left index finger. Keep your other left-hand fingers resting naturally on A, S, and D while your index finger presses F. The small raised mark on the F key can also help you find your home-row position without looking down.

This lesson uses four short drills — a single tap, a double tap, a triple tap, and a building rhythm from one to five letters — so your left index finger learns the exact position and movement needed to hit F accurately and consistently without looking at the keyboard.

Which finger types the letter F?

Your left index finger. When your left hand is correctly positioned on the home row, your index finger should rest naturally on F. Press F with a small, controlled downward tap while keeping your other fingers relaxed.

Why learn F after A, S, and D?

F completes the four main left-hand home row anchor keys: A, S, D, and F. Practicing these keys in order helps your fingers learn their home-row positions and builds the foundation for accurate touch typing.
