🖐️ Lesson: Type the Letter J

J is typed with your right index finger and is one of the four main right-hand home-row anchor keys. It sits directly under your right index finger, next to H. These 4 exercises build your muscle memory from a single tap all the way up to a five-letter run. Keep your eyes on the text above, not on your hands.

How to Type the Letter J Correctly

The letter J is one of the four main right-hand home-row anchor keys used by touch typists. It is pressed with your right index finger. Keep your other right-hand fingers resting naturally on K, L, and ; while your index finger presses J. The small raised mark on the J key can also help you find your home-row position without looking down.

This lesson uses four short drills — a single tap, a double tap, a triple tap, and a building rhythm from one to five letters — so your right index finger learns the exact position and movement needed to hit J accurately and consistently without looking at the keyboard.

Which finger types the letter J?

Your right index finger. When your right hand is correctly positioned on the home row, your index finger should rest naturally on J. Press J with a small, controlled downward tap while keeping your other fingers relaxed.

Why learn J on the home row?

J is one of the main right-hand home-row anchor keys. Practicing J helps your right index finger learn its home-row position and builds the foundation for accurate touch typing.
