🖐️ Lesson 2: Type the Letter S

S is typed with your left ring finger and lives right under it on the home row, next to A. These 4 exercises build that muscle memory from a single tap all the way up to a five-letter run. Keep your eyes on the text above, not on your hands.

How to Type the Letter S Correctly

The letter S is one of the four home row anchor keys (A S D F) that touch typists rest their left hand on between every keystroke. It's pressed with your left ring finger, without moving your other fingers off A, D, and F. Now that you've practiced A with your pinky, S extends that same steady home row position one finger over.

This lesson uses four short drills — a single tap, a double tap, a triple tap, and a building rhythm from one to five letters — so your ring finger learns the exact distance and pressure needed to hit S cleanly, every time, without looking down at the keyboard.

Which finger types the letter S?

Your left ring finger. It should already be resting on S when your hand is in home row position, so pressing it is a small downward tap, not a reach.

Why learn S right after A?

S sits right next to A on the home row. Practicing them back to back reinforces the same left-hand resting position while adding a second finger to your muscle memory.
