⌨️ Lesson: Type Punctuation Marks Together
Practise Punctuation Marks together so switching between these keys feels natural. Shifted symbols use the Shift key on the opposite hand. Four exercises take you from single taps to real-world examples with a live keyboard.
How to Type Punctuation Marks Correctly
This lesson trains Punctuation Marks as a group. Here is where each one lives on a US keyboard:
. (period): . key, right ring finger
, (comma): , key, right middle finger
? (question mark): left Shift + /, right pinky
! (exclamation mark): right Shift + 1, left pinky
' (apostrophe): ' key, right pinky
" (double quotation mark): left Shift + ', right pinky
: (colon): left Shift + ;, right pinky
- (hyphen): - key, right pinky
The golden rule for shifted symbols: hold Shift with the pinky of the hand that is not typing the key. Practising symbols in groups like this builds the rhythm you need for passwords, code, email addresses and punctuation-heavy writing.
Note: symbol positions differ on non-US layouts (UK, German, French and others). If a symbol does not appear, make sure your keyboard language is set to US English.
. (period): . key, right ring finger. , (comma): , key, right middle finger. ? (question mark): left Shift + /, right pinky. ! (exclamation mark): right Shift + 1, left pinky. ' (apostrophe): ' key, right pinky. " (double quotation mark): left Shift + ', right pinky. : (colon): left Shift + ;, right pinky. - (hyphen): - key, right pinky.
Use the Shift key on the opposite side of the key you are pressing: right Shift for left-hand keys, left Shift for right-hand keys.
Symbols are rarely typed alone. Practising them in combinations builds the Shift timing and finger movement you need for passwords, code and punctuation.
