The 20th Asian Games officially began on September 19, 2026, in Nagoya, Japan. The opening ceremony took place at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
Japan is hosting the Asian Games for the third time. The last time was in Hiroshima in 1994. Before that, Tokyo hosted in 1958.
Highlights of the Opening Ceremony
Emperor Naruhito declared the Games open. Empress Masako and other members of the imperial family attended. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry was also present.
Athletes from 45 nations and regions marched into the stadium. Japan has the largest team. China, India, South Korea, and many other countries sent strong groups of athletes.
The ceremony theme was “Harmonic Heart Beat.” It featured dance, music, fireworks, and a heart-shaped stage. Father and son hammer throwers Shigenobu and Koji Murofushi lit the cauldron together.
About the Games
The event runs from September 19 to October 4, 2026. More than 15,000 athletes will compete in 43 sports for 469 gold medals.
Most events are in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya. Some sports, like swimming, are in Tokyo. Football matches take place in other cities too.
The slogan is “Imagine One Asia.” Organizers hope the Games will bring athletes and fans from across the continent together.
Looking Ahead
Competition has already started in some sports. Fans can watch top athletes in athletics, swimming, gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, and many more.
The Games face some early challenges with housing and transport for athletes. Still, the focus now shifts to the competitions and the chance for new champions to shine.
The 20th Asian Games mark an exciting return of Asia’s biggest multi-sport event to Japan after more than 30 years.
